In a world where romance book sequels are becoming more common, 'Husband Material' by Alexis Hall sets itself apart by its unique plot line and story structure.
I found the main premise of this book, weddings, to be a lot more interesting and well developed than the fake-dating trope of the first installment. I enjoyed how Alexis Hall explored the characters' inner conflicts and relationship through a series of different types of weddings. I especially enjoyed the exploration of society and familial expectations when it comes to how relationships must progress.
"Weddings are not marriages"
Furthermore, I fell even more deeply in love with Oliver's character in this book. I loved that we got to explore more of his insecurities and traumas. And I sympathized and related a lot to his conflicting emotions in respect to his family, and himself. On the other hand, Luc was slightly annoying in this book. Even though I understood his perspective, it bothered me how selfish he acted in multiple circumstances throughout the story. I do however agree with him in respect to a certain Bridezilla!
Once again, I wasn't a fan of the length of this book and its pacing which was even slower than the previous one. This book could have definitively been shorter without sacrificing any development and making the story more accessible and entertaining.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a cute non-YA romance that explores a more mature relationship. However, please keep in mind that the pacing is slightly slower than most romance books.
