Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston is delightful! It’s the perfect book for those looking for an enemies-to-lovers story.
The plot of the story is not the most original, as most fanfic readers will let you know, but the author’s brilliant writing more that makes up for it. McQuiston manages to shine a new light to common tropes like “enemies to lovers” and “fake friendship/dating” that remind us why they became so common in the first place and why we love them so much. Plus, in my opinion, the political environment in which the story takes place was very well written. The political themes weren’t too heavy as to alienate readers without knowledge of the USA and/or England government, but still remained a crucial part of the story and the characters’ lives.
Also, her characters were so well developed that in just 400+ pages I fell in love with ALL of them, even the ones I hated! She did a masterful job developing every single one of the side characters and antagonists, even though half of them weren’t even connected to the MC whose point of view we followed. And, of course, I LOVED the MCs! Alex & Henry were a delight to read about as both, individuals, and a couple. They are incredibly entertaining and charming protagonists, and I couldn’t get enough of them.
When the 2016 election was called, I cried myself to sleep. As a Latina woman from Puerto Rico, I was terrified on how it would impact my life and the world. And I can only imagine how more terrified minorities who lived within the USA were. I did nothing productive with that fear. McQuiston, thankfully, did not follow my path. Instead, she used her pain to create a not perfect yet better world that has sparked joy and hope into readers lives everywhere. Hopefully, whenever hate tries to win again, many will remember this book and get inspired to make some history.
If you’re looking for a book that will make you smile and fill up with joy and hope, I definitively recommend you pick up Red, White & Royal Blue!
